Shocking Facts About Imported Flowers

Do you know where your flowers come from? Many people don’t. However, the New Zealand Flower Growers Association (NZFGA) has called for imported flowers to be clearly labelled. That way, shoppers can make an informed choice.

Why imported flowers can fall short

At the time, NZFGA chairman David Blewden said Kiwis could be short-changed when buying flowers. In his view, imported flowers often have a much shorter vase life than New Zealand-grown ones.

He explained that imported flowers were already about six days old when they reached a florist. In contrast, locally sourced flowers usually reached the shop after about two days. As a result, the vase life of imports is likely to be shorter.

Treatment at the border

The NZFGA also noted that some imported flowers are treated and fumigated before sale in New Zealand. According to the association, this can affect vase life. It also raised concerns about chemical residues on flowers that people handle.

Growing numbers of imports

The association reported that rose imports from India alone grew from just over two million to over three million in a year. Therefore, the issue was becoming more important for local growers.

Steps towards labelling

In response, flower marketing company United Flower Growers introduced a policy to label imported products it sells. At the same time, the NZFGA considered “100% NZ-grown” stickers, so people could spot local flowers.
