Why Do We Give Flowers on Valentine’s Day?

Why do we give flowers on 14 February? And why are Valentine’s Day roses such a classic? At Expressions in Cambridge, we love this question. So, here is a little history, plus practical tips for ordering this year.
Why Valentine’s Day roses are the tradition
Roses have stood for love, beauty and romance for centuries. In particular, the red rose became a symbol of passion. Over time, giving flowers became the most common Valentine’s tradition. As a result, red roses are still our best-selling Valentine’s gift.
What do different colours mean?
Colour adds meaning to your gift. For example, red stands for passionate love. Pink, on the other hand, suggests admiration and sweetness. White roses often express devotion. Many people mix red and pink for a softer look. In addition, mixed bunches can be a more affordable option.
Other great Valentine’s flowers
Roses are not the only choice. Lilies, carnations, orchids and tulips also make beautiful gifts. Alternatively, send your partner’s favourite flower for a personal touch. Browse our flowers to see what is available.
When should you order?
Order as early as you can. Valentine’s Day is our busiest day, and roses are in high demand. However, if it slips your mind, we can often help on the day. Orders placed before 12pm can usually be delivered the same day.
How to send flowers
Sending flowers is easy. You can order online on your phone or computer. Alternatively, call us or visit our shop. We deliver across Cambridge for $15 and to Hamilton for $20. Similarly, rural delivery is available for $25.
Add a sweet extra
Want to make it extra special? Add chocolates, a candle or a hand cream. A handwritten card also turns flowers into a keepsake.
